Germany's Holstein Icon, Ramos, passes away

Ramos, internationally the most popular German Holstein sire and owned by the Osnabrueck Herdbuch eG (OHG), passed away at nearly 15 years of age. The quality of his offspring is largely recognized by breeders in at least 40 countries worldwide where his more than 700.000 semen doses were sold. He thus marked the Holstein breed in Osnabrueck and around the world with his abilities to transmit productivity, type, longevity, health and fertility traits to his daughters. All types of dairy producers, from the breeders of elite animals to large dairy herd operators, have greatly benefited from the performance of Ramos daughters and granddaughters in their herds. His actual breeding value is based on already 78.000 daughters. Due to his total semen sales this number will increase probably to more than 100.000. In the starting genomic era Ramos will remain a big influence as well. Cows like Larcest Cosmopolitan, the former genomically # 1 cow in the US, have Ramos in their pedigrees as well as Germany’s actual number 1 Holstein sire.

The Rudolph son Ramos was born on the 26th June 1997 on the Annen farm in Loxten out of the later 150.000 kg lifetime cow and Ambition daughter Heldine.  In retrospect, it is was not easy to see that Ramos was well ahead of his time when he obtained his first official German, but his tremendous breeding values for the upcoming management, health and longevity traits helped him to become the top sire in many Interbull countries. Impressive is also the development of his daughters in later lactations. Today, Ramos daughters are especially valued for their incomparable brood cow abilities, which are confirmed by many champion titles.

The Osnabrueck breeding area, in which Ramos was the most used sire for at least 5 years, is characterized therefore not only by the known high conformation and production level, but also by a tremendous health level, which is confirmed by brand new breeding proofs from the Osnabrueck GKUH project.

Numerous superlatives could be used to describe the phenomenal career of Ramos and the exceptional performance of his progeny. This icon and ambassador of Osnabrueck Holstein Genetics lived healthy for nearly 15 years in the barns of OHG in Melle-Foeckinghausen.
